This piece is part of a world building project I've been working on. The subject is a forest frequented by Alchemists and Scholars in search of coveted materials. I wanted the forest to have an almost magical aura to it while also being foreboding. The intention is to create some kind of threat for those who come to the forest in search of its valuable resources. I also find that places that are highly sought after yet dangerous are often surrounded by folklore. In the world that this forest resides, elders warn of an alchemist horribly changed by his experiments. Yet this danger and these stories only serve to make the forest even more sought after by both eager academics and seasoned explorers. The more experienced who frequent the forest tend to take the folklore to heart. Whether this is some sort of hazing ritual or genuine caution can only be decided by venturing into the forest

Lach is an alchemist wholly devoted to the study. Here is a glimpse of just one of the many small activities that go into the profession. He may spend hours every day just trying to find materials to use in his personal studies. In this scene we see a safe part of the forest mostly picked clean of materials. The unfortunate reality for many alchemists scavenging for materials is how limited resources can be. This makes the dangerous sections of the forest all the more coveted.
Village of Thicklewheat

The Village of Thicklewheat lies in a valley in sight of the Academy of The Alchemical Arts. The village hardly even fits that designation, being home to less than 25 people. Regardless of their numbers the small village is full of the ambitions passed down from generation to generation. That primary ambition being to escape the small valley and be accepted into the Academy. An ambition not uncommon in the lands surrounding the Academy. Many young and old make the journey up the mountain every year, tools and trinkets heavily weighing them down on their journey. All for a chance to be admitted into the auditioning phase of admittance, where their knowledge and competence will be judged.
